Why “a chain of decisions”?
Most whisky guides hand you a list of flavours to spot. I do it the other way round.
Every whisky is the sum of a hundred small decisions — the grain, how long it ferments, the shape of the still, the cask it slept in for years — and each one leaves a fingerprint you can taste.
So instead of chasing tasting notes, you learn to read them.
Whisky never loses its mystery — that’s half the magic — but once you understand why peat smoke, a sherry cask, or the shape of a copper still bends the spirit, a dram stops being just “whisky” with a few random notes and starts telling you its story.
That’s the whole idea: understand the how, and every glass turns from a guessing game into something you can actually read — a skill you keep for every dram you’ll ever pour.
